Summary
In previous editions, you would have to connect a special cable in order to cast from a VR headset to a computer. However, new editions allow for easy, wireless casting through a custom link. This is a guide, with screenshots from one of our managed headsets, on how to start and stop casting.
Before You Start
- This is for Meta Quest devices owned and managed by Genesee Community College via Meta for Work. We do not manage personal devices.
- Devices in Shared Mode will have less buttons on the interface due to limited abilities, but still have the casting option within the same menu.
- There is a small red dot that appears in view when the headset is recording or casting. This is a safety and security feature to ensure that no one is being "watched" without their notice. This dot does not appear in screenshots, recordings, or the cast view.
- For the purposes of this article, "click" refers to pointing at a button or object with a handheld controller and pressing the Trigger or A button to select it.
Steps
1. Start up the headset, and if you don't see this menu somewhere around you, press the Meta symbol ( ∞ ) on the right-hand controller. You can do this even if you currently have an application open. Click on the area with the time display, Wi-Fi symbol, and battery icon. This will open "Quick Settings"
2. Click "Cast" to start the wireless casting session on the headset. Always cast to "Web" (Individual Mode) or "Computer" (Shared Mode), as this will send the stream to our link without the need for additional setup.
3. Open a web browser on the computer of your choice with oculus.com/casting/gccvr . This link should not change, and "connects" you to the session. Enter the six-character code specified by the headset in that website, and you will be brought directly to the view from that headset.
4. When you are done, reopen the same menu and click "Cast" again. You will be asked for confirmation, after which the casting session will end. Please remember to end casting when you are done with the class or session.
