How to Operate a Hyflex Room

Summary

How to get started with class in our Hyflex rooms, built for simultaneous remote and in-person students.

Before You Start

  • Currently, classroom cameras and microphones will only work with the provided instructor PC. You can Zoom from an instructor PC while showing a laptop's display.
  • If you would like to display from a laptop, ensure that the laptop that you use has an HDMI port. If it does not, you will need an adapter.

  • Some rooms may have slightly different technologies as we test different tools for the classroom. However, the general operation should stay the same.

Steps

  1. Log into either the Instructor PC or your Laptop.

  2. There is a touchscreen at each Hyflex instructor station. This is where you choose which device to display from and adjust camera angle/zoom level.

  1. Touch the touchscreen anywhere on the glass to start the system.

  2. At the top of the touchscreen, tap "Laptop" if you would like to display from your laptop, or "Local PC" if you would like to display from the instructor PC. The room display will not turn on unless you choose one, but you can switch between these at any time.

  1. Start your video session from the instructor PC. You will be able to preview your camera angle, or adjust once you are in the session.

  2. In your web conference application, you will see two cameras with the same name in your options. These are the "Front" and "Rear" cameras on the wall.

  3. Most of the time, you will use the "Rear" camera, which shows the front of the room. There are three presets ready to go on the touchscreen for general presentation, or you can use the buttons on the touchscreen to adjust your view.

  1. If you would like to display from your laptop, join the video session from your laptop in addition to the instructor PC. Make sure that the microphone, camera, and volume are all turned off on the laptop to avoid any unintended echo.

  2. If your students are struggling to hear you, try using the microphones in the charging dock on the desk. The mic pack clips to your clothing, and the mic clips to your collar. Press the power button to turn it on, and check that the green light on top is solid. If it's blinking, you are muted, so slide the switch to unmute.
