Classic Outlook Sidebar Location

Summary

This article explains how to revert the Microsoft Outlook interface back to the classic view, moving the navigation bar (Mail, Calendar, Folders) from the left side to the bottom. This guide is intended for users at Genesee Community College and uses your NetID@genesee.edu credentials for login where applicable.


Before You Start

Make sure you have the following:

  • Access to Microsoft Outlook (desktop app) on your device
  • Your NetID@genesee.edu and password for login
  • Outlook must be fully closed and restarted during this process

What you should know:

  • This change only applies to the Outlook desktop application, not Outlook on the web
  • The setting may revert after major Microsoft updates
  • You must have permission to modify Outlook settings (standard users should be fine)

Steps

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook on your device.
  2. Select FileOptions.
    1. File → Options
  3. In the Outlook Options window, click Advanced from the left-hand menu.

  4. Scroll to the Outlook panes section.
  5. Uncheck the box labeled Show Apps in Outlook.

  6. Click OK to save your changes.
    1. Restart Required, OK
  7. Fully close Outlook.
  8. Reopen Outlook.

Result:
Your navigation icons (Mail, Calendar, People, Folders) will now appear at the bottom of the screen, restoring the classic layout.
